Gustavo Petro said that the United States should not treat Colombian migrants as criminals and that he had already turned away U.S. military flights carrying deportees.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he was ordering tariffs, visa restrictions and other retaliatory measures to be taken against Colombia after its government rejected two U.S. military flights carrying migrants.

Trump said the Colombia's refusal jeopardized U.S. national security. He imposed tariffs on incoming goods, sanctions on government officials, enhanced border inspections of Colombian nationals, and banking and financial sanctions.
