US President Joe Biden on Thursday awarded Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman and fierce critic of Donald Trump, with a citizens service medal, after the incoming president warned she "could be in a lot of trouble" once he takes office.

The second-highest civilian medal will also go to Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, who led the investigation with Cheney into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The 20 awards recipients include Americans who fought for marriage equality, an Army nurse during the Vietnam War, and a war correspondent.
